Interior of Twin Bridges school house reputed to be the first school of its kind in the Montana Territories in the mid 1860's. The teachers bed and living quarters are in the rear attached to the classroom. Teachers made around $10 a week in those days. Discipline was the rule and children cleaned, fetched water, and chopped the firewood for the two pot-belly stoves in this photo. Plenty of wood was needed as Montana winters routinely fall to 30 below zero and colder.
