There are times of day and weather, certain times of the year and during changes of seasons, when the ocean has the most amazing and startling color combinations. That is why I can't paint when I'm at the seashore - I have done it, but it is really, really hard because I am mesmerized by the changing colors and forms and the overshadows and undershadows, the surf and the sky. I can't do it - but I love watching it change and alter every single minute color in an instant as every form changes as well. I love that about the ocean and the sky.
This painting describes that moment when near daybreak, the ocean is calm and nearly still, with a sheen on it from the outstretched arms of the sun but washing over everything through a light mist in the sky and on the horizon. It casts the sky the lightest shade of grey while casting a purple tint on the underside of the waves and in between the incoming wave sets along with the barest hint of browns, greens, blues and purples.
