Shooting for the Moon stickers
by Rebecca_Reeder
This small sized sticker uses humor to point out a serious issue. Rain forests are not only essential to the climate of our planet but are home to endangered species, such as the orangutan which is the only great ape surviving in the wild outside of the African continent. The gentle orangutan (such as the one I photographed here at one of O.F.I.'s care centers in 2008) is a vegetarian, having fingerprints and three of the same blood types as we humans. One easy way you can show your concern is simply by avoiding products that contain palm oil every time you step inside a grocery store. Thousand of hectares of forest are burned to clear for palm oil plantations. Sadly, these are proving to be non-sustainable, and the indigenous people who are basically share cropping the land are not reaping the promised benefits. Palm oil is a product that extends shelf life of many packaged foods. How long does your microwave popcorn sit there anyway? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ An update of further concern: August 28, 2008: The Jakarta Post reports that palm oil companies operating in Indonesia have rejected a proposed moratorium on clearing forests and peatlands for oil palm plantations. ~~~~~Be informed. Read non-biased articles such as the January 25, 2007, article from the New York Times: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/01/31/business/worldbusiness/31biofuel.html#
