On November 25, 1970, Japanese author Yukio Mishima and a handful of young men enlisted in his spiritual army -- the Tatenokai of "Shield Society" -- visited a JSDF military base and took its commander hostage. They did this armed only with swords. Mishima gave a speech to gathered soldiers. Then , in an act anticipated in his work and planned for years, Mishima performed hara-kiri and was beheaded by a member of the Tatenokai.
