Sine qua non translates into English as ‘without which, not’. It refers to that, without which, life loses all meaning. It is what John Lennon sang about, ‘whatever gets you through the night’. It is the thing, person or people that make your life worth living. It is that which justifies all the hassle, hard times and confusion.
Sine qua non can take the form of many things. It could be your children, loved one or family. It could be your job, hobby or favourite sport. It could be kicking back with a beer, hiking through the mountains or watching your team play week after week. It could be as tangible as being surrounded by those you love, or as intangible as chasing your dreams.
Sine qua non is different for everyone. It is that magical thing that moves us to fight again, after we have been beaten. It is that which picks us up, after we have fallen.
