Vintage photomechanical print of Smeerenburg in Spitzbergen, Svalbard, Norway which was taken towards the end of the 19th century. Smeerenburg was a whaling station on Amsterdam Island (Amsterdamøya), which is a small island off the northwest coast of West-Spitsbergen. The island was first occupied by the Dutch in 1614, who built the whaling station and Smeerenburg is Dutch for Blubber Town.
