Daguerreotypes and photographs of American poet Walt Whitman (1819-1892)
A selection of the best portraits of Walt Whitman, arranged chronologically.
Photography was going through the initial stage of rapid development during Whitman's lifetime. Louis Daguerre took the first photograph of a person in 1838 on the streets of New York City, and the first image of Whitman in this collection was taken nine years later, when he was 29 years old. Whitman took every opportunity to visit portrait studios over the course of his lifetime.
Author of the epic Leaves of Grass, Whitman also served during the Civil War, memorialized in poetry and Collected Prose, published in 1892.
