Split Second from Everything IS by Sarah Curtiss Greeting Card
Split Second from Everything IS by Sarah Curtiss Greeting Card
page 92-93 of Everything IS. What criteria do we use to justify our belief that our species is the apex of complex life on this planet? Would our importance to the planet be a factor? What would happen on Earth if every human disappeared from the planet tomorrow? every termite? every tree? Am I wrong in thinking that there would be no catastrophic event to the rest of the planet if humans disappeared, but that there would be catastrophic events if termites or trees disappeared? How about a larger category: Mammal? Insect? Bird? Fish? If all mammals disappeared, the insects, birds, and fish should do OK. If the insects, birds or fish disappeared, would there be a catastrophic event for the rest of the planet? Does this not speak to any type of sophistication in the societies of insects, birds, fish, trees? Is it just dumb genetic luck that these ancient creatures have figured out how to survive in such a variety of ways, yet it is our intelligence that has allowed us to survive in so many different climatic conditions?
