A former professor, dabbler in dubious eastern religions, and the father of an illegitimate child who himself later became a saint and bishop, Augustine of Hippo was eventually converted by the prayers of his saintly mother Monica and became one of the greatest theologians of his age. With his mother (herself a reformed alcoholic), living proof of the mysterious and merciful ways of God. He is patron saint invoked against sore eyes, printers, theologians, and brewers.
