St. Cassian, an early Christian martyr, was a schoolmaster in Imola, Italy, who, on refusing to sacrifice to the pagan gods, was turned over to his students, who beat and stabbed him to death with their writing tablets and pens. His feast-day is celebrated on 13 August. Original Art by Matthew Alderman, matthewalderman.com.
