i have always adopted my animals, one cat and 2 dogs (now in doggy heaven). definately the way to go! good message.

i have owned a few dogs in my life, most adopted and some given to me by friends who could no loger keep their pets. Three months before my seventeenth birthday I had just lost my best friend. In hopes of cheering me up, my parents went out and bought a golden retreiver (a breed I have always admired) for me to have as a new friend. They bought her from a breeder, they even went to the breeders home where my pup was kept before they bought her. They never knew that the home they visited, was never really where the breeder kept the dogs they created and stored in masses to sell. Within the first few months of buying my golden macy she started suffering from seizures. By the end of her first year she suffered from hip displasia. After all the love and financial support we could give her with vet care we had to give her away to a golden rescue because my father had lost his job and we could no longer pay for her medical needs. The hardest thing I ever had to do was give my best friend away, but at least she has even for hope now one day not just surving but thriving in life. Out of respect of what my Macy and I had to go through, and fear of having to go through this hardship again with a beloved dog I will never again buy a dog. Adopting is the only safe way to go.

Neuter and spay your animals. Support every animal rights bill that you can. The way many, many people treat animals is awful.

I have had several dogs throughout my life, and with the exception of my beloved corgi Boomerang (who was purchased from a trusted, local breeder), every single one of my dogs has been a shelter rescue. Though the puppies in the window at the petshops were cute, my parents stressed that they were not sort of dogs we wanted. It wasn't until I was much older that I understood why.

of puppy mills are shocking. The animal shelters in every city of our country are filled to overflowing, and many shelters can barely kill the animals fast enough to make room for new arrivals.
