This is Tara and Ed Doehne, from Elyria, Ohio, not far from Cleveland. Tara is a breast cancer Survivor, her husband Ed, a 60 Mile Man (Mr. June, 2012).
I first became aware of Ed and Tara when I became a 60 Mile Man and travelled to Michigan for the 2012 60 Mile Man Calendar Kickoff Party. Ed offered to let me stay at his house after the party, which took 2.5 hours off my 10 hour trip home to CT. After only knowing him for few hours, we became what seemed like lifelong friends with much in common. Specifically, an underlying sense of helplessness to keep our wives from being diagnosed, and a burning desire to rid the world of breast cancer.
I first became aware of this hauntingly poignant portrait of Tara and Ed after becoming Facebook friends with Ed. In Tara’s words: “It was a day I will never forget. Not wanting at the time to even take the photo but looking back, I’m so glad that it has been captured in time. I treasure it now as a reminder of not only our love but what we can endure and overcome together.” As soon as I saw it, in all of its monotone perfection, I knew I had to draw it. Didn’t even seek permission. I just loved the tenderness captured in Ed and Tara, both in total focus, while the rest of the world seemed to blur away. Just beautiful. I only hope I managed to do it justice.
BTW – I put in 2 Easter eggs. Find them.
