The Hill of Tara, known as Temair in gaeilge, was once the ancient seat of power in Ireland. Temair was the sacred place of dwelling for the gods, and was the entrance to the otherworld. Saint Patrick is said to have come to Tara to confront the ancient religion of the pagans at its most powerful site. There are a large number of monuments and earthen structures on the Hill of Tara. The Standing Stone in the right hand of the picture is the "Stone of Destiny" or Lia Fail. Sadly, Greed and Progress are theatening this Historical & Archeolgical treasure trove, as they are blading through to build a Motorway, with litle regard for preserving newly uncovered archeological sites. This photo shows the wide path already cut by road crews for the new M-3 build. The swath in the lower left corner cuts acros Lismullen Earthenworks, which contains artifacts from the Iron Age dating back several hundred years before the birth of Christ.
