The Helix Nebula is one of the nearest planetary nebulae to Earth. Its closeness makes it appear as a donut-like object about half the size of the moon. However, it is very dim, and a good pair of binoculars will show it only as a faint greenish cloud in the constellation Aquarius.

This ultra-sharp image has been produced from a mosaic of NASA Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images combined with the wide view of the Mosaic Camera on the National Science Foundation's 0.9-meter telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory. The eye-like quality of this stunning image has earned it the name “The Eye of God.” The Helix Nebula, the remnant of a Sun-like star, was sculpted by a torrential gush of gases escaping from the dying star and forming a trillion-mile-long tunnel of glowing gases.
