The Ottawa (also Odawa, or Odaawaa), meaning "traders," are a Native American and First Nations people. They are related to but distinct from the Ojibwe nation. They lived near the northern shores of Lake Huron. There are approximately 15,000 Ottawa living in Michigan, Ontario, and Oklahoma. The Ottawa language is considered a divergent dialect of the Ojibwe, characterized by frequent syncope. The Ottawa language, like the Ojibwe language, is part of the Algonquian language family. *********************************************** Like the Ojibwe, the Ottawa usually refer to themselves as Nishnaabe (Anishinaabe, plural: Nishnaabeg (Anishinaabeg)), meaning original people. ********************************* The Ottawa and Ojibwe were part of a long term alliance with the Potawatomi tribe, called the Council of Three Fires and which fought the Iroquois Confederacy and the Sioux. The Ottawa allied with the French against the British and the Ottawa Chief Pontiac led a rebellion against the British in 1763. A decade later, chief Egushawa led the Ottawa in the American Revolutionary War as an ally of the British. In the 1790s, Egushawa again fought the United States in a series of battles and campaigns known as the Northwest Indian War. ********************************* The name in its English transcription is the source of the place names of Ottawa, Ontario and the Ottawa River, even though the Ottawa's home territory (at the time of early European contact), but not their trading zone, was well to the west of the city and river named after them. For several other places named for the Ottawa.*******Odawa Communities-Walpole Island is an island in southwestern Ontario, Canada on the border between Ontario and Michigan in the United States. It is located in the mouth of the St. Clair River on Lake St. Clair, approximately thirty miles (50 km) northeast of Detroit, Michigan, and Windsor, Ontario. It is unceded territory and is inhabited by the Chippewa, Potawatomi, and Ottawa peoples. According to one tradition, Tecumseh's grave is on the reserve there. The population as of the 2001 census was 1,843. It is part of Lambton County, and adjoins the city of Chatham-Kent and the township of St. Clair. Across the St. Clair River to the west are the city of Algonac, Michigan and Clay Township, Michigan in the United States.*******The Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians are a United States federally recognized Native American tribal entity. Robert Kewaygoshkum is the current chairman of the Tribal Council whose offices are in Peshawbestown, Michigan and where it operates the Leelanau Sands Casino and the Grand Traverse Resort & Casino.************The Little Traverse Band of Odawa Indians was officially recognized in Sept. 21, 1994. The tribe has over 4,000 members with a large number living within Charlevoix and Emmet Counties. Though the tribe has only been recognized for a few years, it has been a tribe for much longer.**************Wikwemikong Unceded Indian Reserve (usually known as Wikwemikong, or Wiky) is an Indian reserve in the north-eastern section of Manitoulin Island in Manitoulin District, Ontario, Canada. Wikwemikong is the only unceded indian reserve in Canada, which means that it has not "relinquished title to its land to the government by treaty or otherwise." Wikwemikong means "Bay of the Beaver".
