Outside: This Date in Black History January 7 Births 1891 Zora Neale Hurston, Writer. 1911 Thelma "Butterfly" McQueen, Actress. 1941 Colonial Frederic Drew Gregory, Nephew of Dr. Charles Drew and the first African-American Commander of the Space Shuttle. Events 1837 The Weekly Advocate, the second major Black newspaper in America, was established in New York by Phillip A. Bell. 1927 The first touring Harlem Globetrotter game is played in Hinckley, Illinois. 1950 Marian Anderson made debut at Metropolitan Opera House as Alrica in Verdi's Masked Ball. She was the first Black singer in the company's history. 1950 The James Weldon Johnson Collection officially opens at Yale University. The collection will eventually include the papers of many writers of the Harlem Renaissance. 2002 Shirley Franklin is sworn in as the first African American Mayor of Atlanta. 2003 Thurgood Marshall, a famed civil rights lawyer and U.S. Supreme Court Justice, is honored with a stamp by the United States Postal Service. Inventions 1890 Fountain Pen (U.S. Patent No. 419,065), Inventor: William B. Purvis. 1902 Steam Boiler (U.S. Patent No. 690,730), Inventor: Benjamin F. Jackson. 1930 Manicuring Device (U.S. Patent No. 1,742,862), Inventor: Sylvester S. Jones. Inside: As you celebrate your birthday remember... it’s not the years in your life that count.
