Tiananmen Postcard by VWorks_Studios
Tiananmen gate guards the entrance into Beijing’s famous Forbidden City. Translated into English, Tiananmen literally means the “Gate of Heavenly Peace”. Located along the northern edge of Tiananmen Square, Tiananmen is built in the Ming dynasty in 1417 during the reign of Emperor Yongle. In 1651 the present gate was built by Emperor Shunzhi during the Qing dynasty after the original gate burned down. The immense base of Tiananmen is constructed of huge bricks. At its very base; it is perforated by five arched gateways set on to a foundation of white marble. On top of this structure stands an elegant palace gate tower, its roofs are covered with the traditional imperial yellow-glazed tiles found on top of every building in the Forbidden City. The portrait of famous communist leader Mao Zedong, founder of the People’s Republic of China, hangs over the gate in veneration. Today, Tiananmen stands as a symbol for Beijing and as a symbol for the whole of China.
