Welcome to the TostanGear gallery, which, by popular request, now sells Tostan t-shirts, coffee mugs, calendars, and much more! Show your support for Tostan and spread the word when you show off your TostanGear. If you have a special Tostan design request, feel free to leave us a comment below or send us a message!
Tostan is a 501(c)(3) nongovernmental organization based in Senegal, West Africa. The word Tostan means "breakthrough" in Wolof, the lingua franca of Senegal. Tostan's 30-month Community Empowerment Program (CEP) consists of two parts: the Kobi, which means "to till the soil", teaches democracy and human rights, problem solving, and health and hygiene. The Aawde, meaning "to plant the seed", focuses on literacy, math for management, micro-credit training, loans, and income generating activities. Tostan's human rights-based program has had a significant impact in thousands of African communities, including: • The abandonment of harmful traditional practices such as female genital cutting (FGC) and child marriage • Improved child and maternal health • Enhanced economic security • Increased enrollment of children in school, particularly girls • Empowerment of women and emergence of female leadership The World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, the Population Council and many others recommend Tostan's program as a "best practice" for community empowerment. Recognition for Tostan's program and staff includes the Anna Lindh Award for Human Rights (2005), the UNESCO King Sejong Literacy Prize (2007), and the Conrad N. Hilton Humanitarian Prize (2007). Tostan has implemented the CEP in more than 3,000 villages in Senegal, The Gambia, Mali, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Mauritania, Burkina Faso, The Sudan, Djibouti and Somalia. Important note: TostanGear purchases are not tax-deductible, as payments are sent to Zazzle.com and not Tostan. Tostan does receive a small royalty fee from each purchase, which we put directly towards our programs in Africa. |
