Trafalgar Square stands mid-way between London's west end shopping and the city. A statue of Admiral Nelson towers over the square, commemorating his victory at Trafalgar in the 19th century. The square is a pedestrian precinct, elegantly laid out with fountains and statues at each corner, and is overlooked from the north by the facade of the National Gallery. To the west lies theatre-land, and to the east/south there are views towards Westminster and Big Ben, and the Mall towards Buckingham Palace. In this night shot the fountains are floodlit in blue and with the lights of the buildings behind, the real elegance of the square is captured.
