Vintage Autumn, #1 - Postcard
by AlesiaKaye
An Autumn Harvest, perfect for Thanksgiving.
This Vintage art is from the postcard work of the talented Ellen H. Clapsaddle.
Ms. Clapsaddle's biography is a very sad one that includes laboring as a freelance artist for International Art until accepting a full time position with Wolf Company. While in Germany in 1914 Ms. Clapsaddle became one of the victims of WWI finding herself homeless, penniless and alone in a foreign country.
Like many of the companies at the time that relied on supplies from Germany, the Wolf Company ended up going out of business as a result of the war. One of the Wolf brothers, owners of the company, borrowed money and headed to Europe in search of Ms. Clapsaddle. He found her 6 months later. Ms. Clapsaddle, at the age of 51, was located wandering the streets alone, hungry and ill.
He brought her back to the United States to take care of her as she was no longer fit to earn a living on her own. Unfortunately her health continued to decline and after her caretaker, Mr. Wolf, passed away, it is believed that Ms. Clapsaddle continued to live alone while being mentally incapcitated. Nobody knows for sure how long she lived alone in this condition.
In 1932 she was admitted to the Peabody Home in New York City and had lost all mental reason and only occupied herself while in the home by playing with toys until she finally passed away a short two years after being admitted. She passed away the day before her 69th birthday, penniless, alone and with no acknowledgement of her accomplishments. It wasn't until 10 years after her death that her talent became to be appreciated.
Never take for granted what life you are leading now - you never know where you may end up. These could be "the good old days" when your health, talent and mental abilities allow you to enjoy your life. You are making your memories now - try to make them happy ones and to appreciate this moment in time with which you have been blessed.
