Whirlpool Galaxy (M51) Print
"Some astronomers believe that the Whirlpool's arms are so prominent because of the effects of a close encounter with NGC 5195, the small, yellowish galaxy at the outermost tip of one of the Whirlpool's arms. At first glance, the compact galaxy appears to be tugging on the arm. Hubble's clear view, however, shows that NGC 5195 is passing behind the Whirlpool."

Natural History of Galaxies
There is an interesting new book, Our Undiscovered Universe, by Terence Witt (see Amazon). In it he claims that the Universe is infinitely old (13-14 billion years is an illusion) and that galaxies are nearly immortal as well. He has this to say about M51: "The aptly named Whirlpool Galaxy, M51, was the first galaxy observed to have internal structure. This was in 1851, and is the height of irony. Even when given a name that tells us exactly what it is, the true nature of galactic systems has eluded scientists for over 150 years."
