About This Design
Chitons and Barnacles on a Rock Postcard
Chitons are mollusks with segmented shells. There are many species, but the one most commonly found in the tidal areas of Unalaska Island's beaches are covered with a thick black coating of hardened mucosa. They have white areas down the back of the shell where part of the shell is exposed. Chitons are a favorite traditional food of the Unangan people who are native to Unalaska Island. The Unangans call chitons "baidarki", which is their word for their skin boats, which the chitons resemble. Chitons are also known as gumboots in some areas.
