Confederate Maj. Roswell S. Ripley iPad Sleeve
A rare antebellum portrait of Maj. Roswell S. Ripley, who posed for the photographer George S. Cook in his Charleston studio on January 24, 1861, even before having been issued his Confederate uniform. Originally born in Ohio, Ripley had retired from the U.S. Artillery to marry the wealthy South Carolina widow Alicia Middleton and settle down. After his adoptive State seceded from the Union and its militia occupied abandoned Fort Moultrie in late December 1860, Ripley had been commissioned as a Lieutenant-Colonel and put in command of this stronghold -- although he was still wearing private civilian clothes a month later. He would eventually hold commands in several different theaters, rising to Brigadier General and surviving the war. Featuring a palmetto-and-crescent-moon backing, this iPad sleeve makes an ideal gift for any lover of Civil War history.
