About This Design
Flag-raising Ft Moultrie SC pre-Civil War - Postcard
Rare old photograph of four soldiers raising the Stars-and-Stripes at Fort Moultrie, on Sullivan's Island at the entry into Charleston Harbor, South Carolina, during the summer before the Civil War erupted. It is believed that this posed scene was taken one afternoon in August 1860 by the Charleston photographers James M. Osborn and Frederick E. Durbec, and that the officer hoisting the flag was Capt. Abner Doubleday, later a famous Union General (and who would be wrongly credited with having "invented" baseball). The small brick structure with a chimney in the foreground, was a special furnace for heating iron cannonballs, so as to be fired as incendiary rounds against wooden ships.
