Fort Moultrie SC flag-raising 1860 [sepia] Mouse Pad
History at your fingertips: a rare old photograph of four soldiers raising the Stars-and-Stripes at Ft Moultrie, the stronghold guarding the entrance into Charleston Harbor SC, during the last peaceful summer before the Civil War erupted. It is believed that this scene was staged one afternoon in July 1860 by the Charleston photographers James M. Osborn and Frederick E. Durbec, and that the officer hoisting the flag was Captain Abner Doubleday -- later a famous Union General (and also wrongly credited with having "invented" baseball). The small brick structure with a chimney in the foreground was a furnace used for heating iron cannonballs, so as to be fired as incendiary rounds at wooden ships.
