German Vintage Medieval Knight poster
Ulrich von Liechtenstein ( Manesse Codex , 14th century). Ulrich is shown here as an over-the-top Tournament Knight in his 'disguise' as Dame Venus (with Amor Arrow and torch). In this disguise he showed himself as a great literary lovesong poet...............................................The Codex Manesse is the single most comprehensive source for German Medieval 12th and 13th century love songs and poetry. The book presents 140 poets, several of whom were famous rulers, in both text and images.................................... The texts are preceded by a total of 138 miniatures with idealistic portraits of the poets. The first illustrations depict the most noble of all poets, the Staufer rulers Emperor Henry VI and King Konradin. Dukes and gentlemen are followed by professional poets such as Walther von der Vogelweide or Wolfram von Eschenbach. The predominate theme is the “Minne”, the intimate courtly love between men and women. ..................................................... “Saget mir ieman, waz ist minne?” (Can anyone tell me what love is?). In the High Middle Ages, this concern with the true nature of love, voiced here by poet Walther von der Vogelweide, preoccupied itinerant troubadours, nobles and clerics alike. Countless texts and pictures tell us that a major change of attitude had come about. A knight was no longer content to possess the lady who took his fancy. He was out to conquer her heart. The poems and pictures in the Codex Manesse embody and epitomize this sea change in medieval social attitudes.
