The first Saturday of every month is National Play Outside Day! This national day serves as an important monthly reminder for us to get outside and have some fun, regardless of our age. In the digital age of constant social media and endless streaming, it can be easy to forget how enjoyable it is to spend some time outdoors while being active. National Play Outside Day encourages us to unplug from our often distracting devices and head out into nature, offering us a much-needed reset, and promoting life-long healthy habits.
The Origins of National Play Outside Day
National Play Outside Day was founded in 2011, by Aaron Wiggans and Rhonda D. Abeyta, who had grown concerned after observing the amount of time children were spending indoors using technology like tablets, phones, and video gaming systems. Their concern was valid, as further studies on the subject have shown that excessive screen time for children can cause irregular sleep, behavioral problems, obesity, slowed development (especially in communication and problem-solving skills,) as well as impaired academic performance.
On the other hand, playing outside and spending time in nature can offer kids an array of integral benefits like improved physical fitness, exposure to more vitamin D, increased social skills, better sleep, independence, reduced stress, an appreciation for the environment, and improved mental health. You don’t have to be a child to engage in this important national day, of course, because having some fun outside is extremely beneficial for people of all ages, with all of the above positive effects also being useful for adults! Be a role model for your little ones and lead by example by making a priority to take part in outdoor activities at least a few times a week.
