About This Design
Mammoth Postcard
Mammoth, Tintic Mining District, Juab county, UT Mammoth was a small mining town near Eureka in a desolate valley. Silver and gold were discovered here around 1870. A mining engineer, George Robinson, founded another mining town in the entrance of the valley and named it after himself. The two prosperous settlements grew together and become known simply as Mammoth. Mines had water for industrial use, but the price of the drinking water was 10 cents a gallon. The town had a school, four hotels and saloons. Nearly 3000 people lived here in 1900, but the town began to decline soon. The population was 750 in 1930. Today Mammoth still has some residents. The upper and lower town is clearly visible. Most of the buildings disappeared. Concrete foundations, wooden beams are still visible. The entire place is covered by sage bush. The hillsides and the town itself have a lot of rusting mining equipment, mine entrances, ruins and barely visible smelters.
