Monte Cassino, Polish 2nd Corps, WW2 T-Shirt
The Battle for Monte Cassino was in fact a series of 4 brutal and poorly coordinated battles fought by the Allies in an attempt to smash the German Gustav Line during the Italian winter, spring and early summer of 1944. British, American, French, North African, Asian, Canadian and Polish troops all took part in these series of epic battles. The Germans cleverly integrate the historic, hilltop Benedictine abbey of Monte Cassino into their defensive positions, which commanded the town of Cassino, Rapido and Liri valleys, and the main road to Rome. The Allies believed the Germans were using the monastery as an observation post. In response, it was heavily bombed and reduced to rubble on the 15th February, 1944. Two days later, German paratroopers took up new defensive positions within the ruins. The savage fighting at Monte Cassino is widely recognised as the worst of the war in the west. It’s estimated the Allies lost around 55,000 men while the stubborn German defenders lost about 20,000 killed and wounded. On the 18th of May 1944 a group from the 12th Podolian Uhlan Regiment, Polish 2nd Corps, finally made it to the top of Monte Cassino and raised a Polish flag over the ruins. The Polish troops found just 30 wounded German defenders. The battles for Monte Cassino, and the heroic struggle of the Polish Corps to finally take the abbey, are the inspiration for this new t-shirt design. We have used an authentic WWII photograph of the ruined abbey, and re-coloured it a brilliant, fiery orange. We also removed the original background and added a more dramatic sky-scape. We added the Polish White Eagle (Orzeł Biały) of the national coat of arms to the design. The eagle is usually emblazoned on a red shield, and has been used as a symbol of Poland’s nationhood since the 12th century appearing on flags and coins.
