BELLS OF REMEMBRANCE Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.
BELL (1) Revolutionary War 1775–1783,Veterans Died-4,435
Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure.
BELL (2) War of 1812,Veterans Died-2,260
We are met on a great battle-field of that war.
BELL (3) Mexican American War,1846-1848,Veterans Died-13,283
We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live.
BELL (4) Civil War 1861-1865,Veterans Died-623,026
It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.
BELL (5) Spanish American War 1898,Veterans Died-2,446
But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate -- we can not consecrate -- we can not hallow -- this ground.
BELL (6) World War I 1914–1918,Veterans Died-116,708
The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract.
BELL (7) World War II 1939–1945,Veterans Died-407,316
The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here.
BELL (8) Korean War 1950–1953,Veterans Died-36,914
It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced.
BELL (9) Vietnam War 1960–1975,Veterans Died-58,169
It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us --
BELL (10) Persian Gulf War 1990–1991,Veterans Died- 299
that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion –
BELL (11) Afghanistan,October 7, 2001–present,Veterans Died-792+
that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain -- that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom –
BELL (12) Iraq, 2003–present,Veterans Died-4,177+
and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.
