About This Design
Pest and the Danube Postcard
Angyalföld (means: Angel's land), Budapest, Hungary Today this is the 13th district of Budapest. The origin of the toponym is not clear. This name in German (Engelfeld) appears in a map from 1830. Some legends attribute the name to the fact that there were some midwives who performed abortion. They helped to the fallen maiden to have "angels". Angyalföld lies on the left bank of the Danube river (on the left side of the photo), on the Great Plains. Originaly It was a working class suburb. Many different factories were located here. There were several foundries, A shipyard, etc. In the 1980's the construction of the 3rd metro line contributed to the development of the zone. After the end of the communist era the industrial character of Angyalföld changed. The factories moved out or were closed. On the riverside part the industial buildings were demolished and several luxury buildings were built in this area. The factories of the Vaci Avenue (on the photo) were also demolished and many office and administrative buildings were built. Some working class housing estates are also visible in the picture.
