17 Octavian/Augustus' 17th Legion - Eagle T-Shirt

While it is known that Julius Caesar used a 17th Legion during the Civil War with Pompey, nothing is known of what happened to them. It's most likely that it was formed in 49 BC, made up of former senatorial recruits that had surrendered to him at Corfinium that February. After the Battle of Philippi, Octavian founded a 17th Legion, using it as one of many to put down the rebel pirate Sextus Pompeius and resote Rome's grain supply. The Legion later fought in the Germanic Campaigns of Augustus' Generals Drusus and Tiberius. The 17th was one of the Legions destroyed in the Teutoburg Forest disaster in 9 AD. Its eagle standards would be recovered during the reigns of Tiberius and Caligula.
