1896 Punch cartoon 'The Great Unknown' Tapestry

A VERY neato full color Punch cartoon from the mid-1890s. The scene shows two magicians, the one on the left having the word 'Grosvenor' on his sleeve, the other holding a book marked 'Funds.' Both are wearing pendants marked with a question sign. Between them it reads 'I am the Veiled Mahatma of Prosperity! Believe in ME, ask no questions, and you will all roll in riches!!!' Some men in the audience are wearing banners which read 'Gold Bug,' 'Free Silver Crank,' '(illegible) Protection Fanatic.' Other banners are hanging from the ceiling: 'Trusts,' 'Monopolists,' etc. At the time a lot was going on: labor unrest, tariffs, currency policy (look up William Jennings Bryan's 'Cross of Gold' speech), patronage, the rich getting richer, and the poor getting poorer. Almost like today. A neat gift for the politically aware, the labor activist, anyone interested in late 19th century history.
