1941 Winchester M1A1 Carbine Battle Rifle Travel Mug This is an historical look at the American 1938 Winchester M1 Semi-Automatic Carbine . It displays the designer, country of origin, caliber and period images. It's one in a new series from Robert Still from Liberty House. The year is 1938 and the Military has been running field exercises and comes to the conclusion that there's a need for a lighter weight battle rifle for it’s supporting troops. The Chief of the Infantry summits a request to the Ordnance Department for a lighter weight battle rifle for staff, motor crews, radio operators and airborne troops. The parameters for this new rifle were that it would not weigh more than five pound and have an effective range of 300 yards. The Ordnance Department puts the bid out and several companies respond. Winchester brings on Marsh Williams (David Marshall Williams). Marsh William had already had success with the Army and Winchester knew he was capable of coming up with a solid design. Williams design won the contract and the Army moved forward with the M1A1 30 caliber carbine. The carbine went through an evolution of improvements which finally became the M3 a night vision Sniper rifle. This gas-operated short-stroke semi automatic rifle has a rate of fire of 750 rounds/min with a muzzle velocity of 1900 ft/s. It has an effective range of 300 yd. It has been used all over the word and was used in US inventory up to 1973. After the rifle went into production and became so popular with the troops, Williams became know as Carbine Williams.
