St. Phocas the Gardener was a pious, early 4th-century Christian innkeeper with a green thumb in Sinope, Pontus (modern Turkey). Known for his charity, he fed the poor from the surplus of his abundant vegetable garden. He was hospitable even to the Roman soldiers sent to execute him for The Faith feeding and sheltering them the night before his demise. Having dug his own grave, St. Phocas was beheaded c. 303 during Emperor Diocletian’s persecution.
