The Poyais scheme of Gregor MacGregor is known as one of the most brazen confidence tricks in history. In the early 1800's he convinced almost 200 people to emigrate to a fabricated Central American colony called "Poyais". He went as far as exchanging currency to would-be settlers, selling official government positions, and issuing Poyaisian bonds on the London Stock Exchange.
