The Smithsonian American Art Museum displays the original of Albert Bierstadt’s “Among the Sierra Nevada, California,” but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the beauty of his views of the U.S.’s frontiers. Painted in 1868, the original is an oil on canvas. The Smithsonian’s gallery label notes that Bierstadt was a master at self-advertisement. He sold tickets to the unveiling of a new piece, then traveled it around before offering it for sale. The majestic, well known painting of the Sierras, captured in a heavy, quality clear lucite paperweight! He loved it and recognized the painting right away. It’s good throughout our busy days, to have focal points that can remind us of the vastness and the beauty of Nature.
