That turtle backed ship in the foreground is the one and only USS Katahdin, a harbor-defense ram of innovative design, though her lower than expected speed made her a disappointment. Katahdin's design was a new departure in naval architecture, built to ride extremely low in the water with her bow awash while under way. Her hull embodied several new features later used in early submarines. Finally, since she was expended as a gunnery target in 1909, the date in the caption must be wrong. Clear and distinct, you wouldn't think the photo was over a century old.
