Public domain. + Here, the artist used various materials and techniques to achieve his effects. Sanguine is a natural red chalk derived from hematite, a common iron oxide compound, used in art from remote antiquity to the present day for its rich reddish brown tones. In silver stain, a silver compound was applied to the surface of clear glass and then the glass was fired in a kiln to produce yellow, yellow-orange, and orange tones. Presumably, vitreous paint and enamel provided the blues.
