Autistic Adult Explained Thro The Story of Mowgli T-Shirt

As an adult with Aspergers (ASD) I was trying to find a way to help neurotypicals, parents and others how neurodiverse, neurodivergent autistic children feel and are treated when they are children, and often into adulthood. Through stories for decades, people have been trying to educate the larger community that difference can be / is beautiful and it should be embraced not forced to conform with the majority. I as such came up with a retold story of Mowgli which is one many of us are very familiar with and we empathise with! There are others, there's Dumbo (big ears yet he can fly), there is the story of the Ugly Duckling, who is actually a swan. The story of Mowgli as I have told it appears on the back of the t-shirt, with the expression - I am just a Mowgli written on the front with the infinity symbol of neurodiversity featuring. this slogan 'I am just a Mowgli' was said by a fellow Aspie upon reading the story of Mowgli on a group for Adults with Aspergers. Thank you to him (no names for confidentiality) for inspiring this t-shirt. Mowgli was human raised by wolves. All his young life Mowgli felt different but didn't know why. His parents and peers saw him as inferior and weak and weird and while his parents tried to make him more like his brothers his brothers bullied him. Mowgli tried desperately to be a 'good wolf'. Only when Mowgli became older did he learn he was not a wolf but a human. And that he had his own set of skills and abilities that were different and in some ways superior to the wolf. So while he didn't behave like them he was still strong and capable of greatness in his own right. In time his parents and peers all came to learn he was born different and that while he couldn't be a perfect wolf he made a pretty amazing human. And they allowed him to be 'human'. And herein is how it is for an autistic child and how you can make their life worse or better. Make it better. By LeahG copyright
