    It is a member of the Neotropical silversides family and can be found in southern Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay in South America. It inhabits river systems, including lakes and lagoons, sometimes forming landlocked populations.  It feeds on crustaceans like barnacle larvae and shrimp, along with insects, worms, mollusks and even smaller fish. It can reach a maximum length of 42 cm (16.5 inches).
