Mokkō is also called Yokoboke and is the most commonly used among the Boke family crests. Takazawa et al.'s "Dictionary of Family Crests" lists Wood Sorrel, Boke, and Hawk's Feather as the three major family crests, while Niwa Motoji's "Basic Knowledge of Surnames and Family Crests" lists Wisteria, Boke, and Wood Sorrel. / According to one source, the Boke crest originated from a design called "窠" (kuwa) that was introduced from China and used as a pattern on clothing, which later became a design on the frame of a blind (misu), and eventually became known as the Mokkō crest. Another source states that the Boke crest is derived from a design on a cloth called "帽額" (mōkō) that was attached to the frame of a blind, and is not related to the fruit of the Boke or cucumber plant.
