Bishkek's statue of Soviet leader Vladimir Lenin has to be one of the city's most recognizable landmarks. Lenin stands behind the brutalist inspired Kyrgyz National Historical Museum. Built in a Soviet brutalist style, the Bishkek National Museum is still a head turner. Bishkek was named Frunze before Kyrgyzstan's independence, and Communist inspired architecture lines the streets as a result. The Bishkek National Museum is a popular date for couples, who enjoy the gardens and fountains outside the building. More surprisingly is the Lenin Statue's popularity with foreign tourists visiting Bishkek. Most days, foreigners can be seen snapping photos of Lenin and asking question about the statue.
