A jaunty Blue Jay with accompanying words by Henry David Thoreau in a script with a slightly rough and antique handwritten feel appropriate to the quotation. The text reads:

"Winter has a concentrated and nutty kernel
if you know where to look for it."

The Blue Jay was inspired by a 1760s American watercolor by an unknown artist; the chestnut, seed pod and tiny garden spider by late 16th-century works.
It's a joy to bring the art and writings of previous centuries into our own for everyday use and enjoyment. I hope you will enjoy using this mug as much as I enjoyed creating the design.
