Wedding Matchboxes

What Do Customers Say about Zazzle’s Wedding Matchboxes?

Taylor T., ★★★★★

I absolutely love these and cannot wait to use them for my wedding. I chose to put the stickers on myself but you can pay extra to have them put on for you. Each matchbox has about 18 matches inside and the quality is great! These were very affordable compared to other companies and I would highly recommend them. My whole family has used matches as party favors and guests always love them!

Jane B., ★★★★★

These are just beautiful! We paid the extra charge to have them already assembled and I’m so glad. We are placing them in a large glass pedestal bowl for the wedding guests to pick up at the reception.

Heather E., ★★★★★

Matches and stickers arrived promptly, and perfectly packaged. You affix the stickers yourself, but it took no time at all. Matches are decent quality. The box is glossy black with a good strike strip. The mountain image I chose was an excellent choice for a mountain wedding.

Frequently Asked Questions about Wedding Matchboxes

Are matchboxes a good wedding favor?

Absolutely. Matchboxes have an old-school feel to them that suits a variety of vintage-themed weddings. Not only can wedding matchboxes be personalized with photos and quotes to give them sentimental value, but they have a practical purpose too, and can be used to light candles, incense, and fireplaces like any other matches. They’re small and portable, so they’re easy for guests to carry home, and at less than a dollar per matchbox, they’re a budget-friendly favor.

How many boxes of wedding matches do I need?

It depends on the size of your wedding, but for a smaller celebration (50 to 100 guests), we think 2 to 3 packs of 50 is a good number. A single pack might seem like enough for a micro-wedding, but if you scatter the matchboxes on trays or in bowls throughout the venue, your supply could run low quickly. Ordering at least a second pack ensures you’ll have extras to keep yourself as mementos or to tuck into thank you bags after the wedding. For a larger wedding (say, 200+ guests), order 5 or 6 packs. If you’re hosting a couple’s shower, which usually has a smaller guest list than the wedding itself, or you only need matchboxes for the wedding party at your rehearsal dinner, one pack would suffice.

Will the matches actually strike?

Yes, all 18 matches in each box will actually work. The white tip on each wooden match means that these are strike-anywhere matches, not red-tipped safety matches. In other words, scraping them against any rough, dry surface will cause them to ignite, and you don’t need to have the original box on hand to use one.

What assembly is required?

Assembling our matchboxes simply means adding a sticker to each box. There are two options on the product page: Self-Assembly and Assembled. If you choose ‘Self-Assembly’ and order, for example, 50 matchboxes, the package you get will contain 50 blank matchboxes and a sheet of 50 stickers bearing your design. You then apply one sticker to the front of each box. If you choose ‘Assembled,’ we’ll do this step for you, and your matchboxes will arrive with the stickers already applied. Assembly starts at $11.25, depending on the design, but the fee doesn’t increase if you order more matchboxes.

Can my guests pack matchboxes to take home with them?

For the most part, yes, guests are free to take the matchbox favors home with them to use, unless they’re catching a flight. Both the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) prohibit strike-anywhere matches on your person, in carry-on bags, and in your checked luggage, just in case they should accidentally spark and cause a fire. If you’d like to make sure your out-of-town guests have a different favor to pack for the flight home, check out some suggestions at the end of these Frequently Asked Questions.

How far in advance should I order my wedding matchboxes?

About 2 months in advance is ideal. Matchboxes, like your day-of stationery and other wedding favors, aren’t actually needed until the big day, so you don’t have to order them too early. Production takes 4 business days, and delivery takes an additional 4 to 7 business days with Standard, 2 to 3 business days with Premium, or 1 to 2 business days with Express. If you chose to assemble the matchboxes yourself, allow a couple of extra days to apply the stickers to each box.

What should I put on my matchbox?

Matchboxes have a small design area, but it’s usually enough space to include one photo, your names and the date, and a quote or pun, such as "The Perfect Match," "Let Love Sparkle," or "Light Up My Life." The dimensions for the matchbox design area are, horizontally, 2" L x 1.25" W, and vertically, 2" L x 1.25" W. However, you don’t need to worry about these measurements too much if you’re using a template. Click on the blue ‘Personalize this design’ button and, in the design tool screen that appears, substitute your own text and photos for the placeholder elements indicated in the left sidebar. Photos should be 200 PPI minimum and can be uploaded as JPEGs, PNGs, PDFs, SVGs, and AI (Adobe Illustrator) files. Your design will be surrounded by a black or white border, depending on which Matchbox Color you select.

What other wedding favors are available?

  • Wedding Candy Favors: Candy favors can be dropped in your guests’ wedding welcome bags or added to the dessert table. Some popular greetings for these include "Love is Sweet" on our Hershey’s bars and "Hugs and Kisses" on our Hershey’s Kisses.
  • Wedding Magnets: Many people use magnets as Save the Dates or wedding invitations, but since magnets are a good collectible anyway, they can also work as a favor or keepsake. To add a message, try "Thanks for Sticking with Us!" or "Celebrating our Natural Attraction on [Insert Date]."
  • Wedding Can Coolers: Can coolers are a favor that guests can put into use right away. Keep everyone’s drinks cool at a hot outdoor wedding, or line the bar area with a personalized koozie for each attendee. Feature the location of a destination wedding on the cooler, or add a message like "Sip, Sip, Hooray" or "Cheers to [Couple’s Names]."
