There are ten native species of maple (Acer) in Canada, including the sugar maple, red maple, manitoba maple and silver maple, and three or four introduced species. According to official tree people, the red maple is the most abundant tree in eastern North America. All maples produce some sort of sap, but the sugar maple is the source of most of the sap used to make sweet delicious maple syrup. Sugar maples also put on the most glorious autumn show when their leaves change from green to shades of orange, yellow and red. The maple leaf was a symbol of French and English Canada in the middle of the nineteenth century, and over a hundred years later the red stylized leaf became the main element of the flag of Canada.
