What is a save the date?
Great question! A save the date is similar to a wedding invitation, except it is sent well in advance of the formal invitation. Its purpose is to give your guests an opportunity to learn the date of your wedding, arrange for time off work if needed, organize childcare and to make travel arrangements. Unlike an invitation, it likely does not contain the precise location, exact time of the ceremony, gift requests, accommodation information, or any other special requests that pertain to the wedding itself. Essentially, it is a way of keeping the guests in-the-know about when and where your wedding is, while you work out the finer details.
When should you send a save the date?
- Local wedding? Send them 4–6 months before the big day.
- Destination wedding? Give guests extra time - send them 6–12 months in advance. This will give your guests as much time as possible to start making plans and budgeting for the big day, without giving away too much of the surprise.
What Should Be Included in the Save the Date Card?

Do save the date cards come with envelopes?
Most save the date cards include free white envelopes, though some types of envelopes may have an extra cost. Postcards do not come with envelopes. On each individual product page you will find information regarding envelopes specific for that item.
