A tiny ghost crab is perfectly camouflaged among the pebbles and sand grains on a Wainiha Beach, which is on the north shore of Kauai, Hawaii. I didn't see it until it moved. Ghost crabs are semiterrestrial crabs of the subfamily Ocypodinae. They are common shore crabs in tropical and subtropical regions throughout the world, living in deep burrows in the intertidal zone. They are scavengers and predators of small animals. The name "ghost crab" derives from their preference for nighttime activity and their usually pale coloration. They are sometimes called sand crabs.
