Candy canes are traditionally associated with Christmas. The origin of these seasonal sweets is said to go back to the seventeeth century in Cologne, Germany, when the choirmaster at the church asked a local candymaker to create some candy sticks for the kids so they'd stay quiet during the Christmas Eve service. To justify giving candy in church, the sticks were given hooks to resemble shepherds' staffs or crooks, thus relate to the nativity scene. This story may or may not be true as it can't really be verified. In any case, candy canes have been linked to Christmas for many generations and were first "officially" recorded in association with this festive season in the 1870s.
