This elegant natural history illustration depicts the now-extinct Carolina parakeet, a once-vibrant parrot native to the eastern and midwestern regions of the United States. Barraband was celebrated for his precise and lifelike depictions of birds, often working in collaboration with scientists to document species with both artistic beauty and scientific accuracy. The fine detailing in the feathers, beak, and claws reflects this dual purpose, blending aesthetics with taxonomy. The Carolina parakeet was the only parrot species endemic to the United States. It inhabited forests, swamps, and river valleys, often traveling in noisy flocks. Unfortunately, due to habitat destruction, hunting, and disease, the species declined rapidly in the 19th century, with the last known individual dying in captivity in 1918.
